2017年底，3GPP推出第一版5G標準(NSA Rel-15)，在2018年除了美國Verizon及AT&T等營運商推動5G固網的商用計畫外，南韓(South
Korea)將在2月的韓國冬奧演示5G應用。3GPP預計在2018年6月完成Rel-15制定(SA Rel-15)，在此之前必須完成部分被擱置的研究項目(study item)，包括：nonorthogonal
multiple access(NOMA)、unlicensed spectrum
for NR、nonterrestrial network (channel modeling)、eV2X evaluation methodology以及integrated access 和backhaul。2018年6月推出的5G標準，將完整定義5G的用戶平面(user plane)和控制平面(control plane)，並使用新的核心網路(core network)。根據通訊大廠Qualcomm表示，眾所期待的5G智慧型手機預計在2019年上半年度亮相。
